A Small Victory for Bloomington Taxpayers

On Nov. 3rd, 2009 you had the chance, to voice your concern, and cast a vote!

By 12 Votes, District II put one Conservative on the Council.  A good start.

Now it is time to keep the pressure on all your elected officials and hold them accountable for their fiscal actions.  After all IT IS YOUR MONEY, NOT THEIRS!  Are they being good stewards with it?

Would you entrust them with your Family Budget?  Do not sit back and assume someone else is looking over their shoulder.  Get involved! Show up at Council Meetings, let your voice be heard.  They are civil servants and they work for you!  You pay their salary, expect them to do a good job for you, or replace them with someone that will!

Imagine if you knew your taxes were going to increase by 45% over the next 5 years.  Would you do nothing and let it happen or would you take action to stop it?  "Save Bloomington" is a resident group, along with the Republican Party of the 3rd Congressional District, that is concerned with the massive city spending being pushed through City Hall.  During this economic crisis, now is not the right time for the City of Bloomington to raise your taxes.

So will my taxes go up 45% in the next 5 years?

Not if we can work together to stop it.  When the Bloomington City Council approved the 2009 budget, they included a chart with the possible future/forecast of things to come.  We would prefer that the City work hard now to avoid these types of scenarios, rather than publish a document that could scare potential developers and business investors.  Our property taxes make up about 68.3% of the revenue the City collects, here is the chart in question, as you can see they show significant Property Tax Levy Increases:

Recently the Council only passed a 7.67% Levy increase for 2010, isn't that good?

No, an increase is still an increase for you and me, we need to see cuts.  The Council realizes it will see less revenue from permits, licenses, hotel taxes, and other fees, so now it wants to come after us to make up the difference, instead of making the cuts now to avoid coming after us.  Keep the pressure up, we have until Dec., when they have their final levy vote.  Keep calling the City Hall at 952-563-8782 to let them know where you stand.

How do we compare with other Cities?

Not well, we are the 2nd highest taxed City in our class for Hennepin County:

Effective Residential Taxes on a house valued at $250,000 for every year.
